Commuter towns must take their share of new residents as greater Christchurch’s population balloons by as much as 50 per cent in the next 30 years, a new report says.

The draft report said a combination of population growth and social change meant up to 86,000 new homes, more that previously thought, would be needed by 2048. However, it warns the rowth in satellite towns will lead to increased traffic congestion without better public transport.
